This week marks another major milestone for 1st Ruddington Scouts – as the they celebrate their 80th birthday.
The group actually came into existence during World War II – launching on 12th July 1943. Since then, as Ruddington’s population has grown, its membership has gone up substantially – with three Beaver Colonies, three Cub Packs and two Scout Troops, numbering over 130 young people in all. They’re supported by more than 40 adult volunteers as leaders and trustees.
Jennifer Boniface, Chair of 1st Ruddington Scouts, reveals: “We recently held a birthday camp for the entire Group, taking over 100 individuals to a camp site in Ashby. The weather was glorious, and the young people took part in a number of adventure activities, including zip lining, abseiling and bushcraft. The traditional sing song around a campfire in the evening was enthusiastically joined in by all!”
To commemorate turning 80, they also held a badge design competition. The trustees couldn’t choose between two of the best designs by Niamh and Ellie and so decided to combine them, as shown. These badges have now been given to all children and leaders.
Jennifer adds: “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ruddington residents for their ongoing generous support of the group and will continue to engage with the community to support the Village Market and periodic litter picking.”
